Small Historical Cities
Small towns with a historical flair on the road to success
There was no national network in Austria that focussed on the marketing of provincial cities as a holiday destination until 1993. Backed by the Austrian Tourist Board, 14 cities in all of Austria (meanwhile 18 cities), including Radstadt, joined ranks to appear on the market collectively.
Despite differences in what they offer, the cities between the Neusiedler Lake and Lake Constance have quite a bit in common: They are all chartered cities but are not provincial capitals. Their city centers are all heritage protected, and they have an extensive array of cultural offerings. It goes without saying that these cities have the necessary infrastructure for tourism, with at least 300 quality beds (***/**** category) and a tourist association, which attends to the guests needs. A name that combines these components was soon found: “Small Historical Cities”.
