Summer vacation in Radstadt

The small city of Radstadt (pop. 5.000) lies at 856 meters above sea level. Radstadt is surrounded by high mountain peaks and set amid a breathtaking natural backdrop only 70 kilometers south of Salzburg. Not only does its central location in the Salzburg Sportwelt make it an ideal departure point for hikers and bicyclists, but also its historical flair is alluring. As early as 1289, Radstadt received its town carter because of its strategically significant location. Ever since, tradition and hospitality are of the highest importance to the locals.

Visitors who are in search of Radstadt’s history can stroll along the well preserved 13th century city wall, where they will be fascinated by the parish church and the cobbler’s tower. Three city towers and the city’s pond bear witness to the town’s eventful past.

Take a tour with Radstadt’s city watch. Dressed up in traditional garb, he guides through the medieval town, carrying halberd and lantern, all the while singing the famous night-watchman's song and telling anecdotes and stories about the city’s former times. The two museums of local history contain real treasures out of Radstadt’s long history. Here you can marvel at remains from Roman times, ancient customs and artisanry of old.

In Radstadt there is much feasting! At the “Feast of Dumplings” you are spoiled with “round” deliciousness and the three-day “Guard Feast” is one of the highlights of the region. The decorative-arts market with its high standard of workmanship and the “Paul-Hofhaimer-Days”, the festival of old and new music, attract many art and culture aficionados to Radstadt every year. Mountain feasts, traditional evenings, Harvest Festival events, guided hikes and the farmer’s market ensure an interesting and varied vacation.
